WHAT TO DO
Hiking/ Viewpoint
The Walla Walla 2020 organization presents comprehensive information about all aspects of the area. Specific to recreation, check out their page dedicated to hikes on open lands around the historic site. Enhance your trip and consult all the resources available about the Wallula Historic Site. Consider adding Historic Sites and Markers of Walla Walla County by Daniel Clark to your home library.
WHAT TO EXPECT
This area is exposed to all the elements. Make sure to dress appropriately and bring plenty of water. While these trails are short, they are not maintained, cover loose and slick ground, and can cross both the highway and railroad. Read our Journey Through Time at Wallula Gap blog for more ideas about where to recreate in the area.
Amenities
There are no facilities or services. This is a primitive recreation site.
Wildlife Awareness
We are all so fortunate to recreate in the Blue Mountains and Walla Walla Valley. So many opportunities exist to play outside, whether in a national forest, wilderness area, or on a Wild and Scenic River. With these opportunities comes great responsibility to appreciate that we are mere visitors and should all take pride in being good stewards of the wild.
Many animals call these protected places home, including moose, elk, bear, cougar, bobcat, and snakes to name a few. Take precautions to respect their home and understand the appropriate response should an encounter occur.
Additionally, many plant species thrive in the Blue Mountains, so staying on trail is always good practice.
Carry First Aid supplies to better respond to accidents or encounters, and always let others know where the day’s adventure is taking you.
Field Notes
Pets: In general, pets are allowed on a leash and under control throughout jurisdictions. The only restrictions we have encountered are around swimming areas. As a best practice, be mindful of riparian habitat in general. You never know where a precious spawning area might be located. Pack it in and pack it out applies to your furry friend as well.
Disclaimer: While the Outside Walla Walla team has enjoyed all the adventures listed on this site, we cannot provide real-time conditions & maintenance reports. Extreme weather can change access overnight. Volunteer groups might lose capacity to manage trail systems. We do our best to report that information and update our site accordingly, but please read our Disclaimer (footer) and proceed with any adventure as your comfort level allows.
WHEN TO GO
Given its location on the west end of Walla Walla County, it is dryer and much less likely to experience snowfall. It is possible to enjoy this area throughout the year, but use caution during the hotter months. In trade for no snow, it is a very windy area. If conditions are not ideal, consider the short trip to the McNary National Wildlife Refuge as an alternate activity.
HOW TO GET THERE
The parking area is extremely close to US 730 at mile post 4.8 not far from Wallula Junction. Take caution when turning into the small parking area as oncoming traffic does not have a clear view of that crossing. Likely, you will miss the turn, and that is okay. Continue to Port Kelly Road just past the Walla Walla Yacht Club to turn around.
From Walla Walla, take US 12 west to Wallula Junction for approximately 30 miles. At the junction, keep left on US 730 for 1.3 miles to mile post 4.8 and the parking area for the Wallula Historic Site.
