ACTIVITIES

 )

If you want to summit a mountain without having to climb it (or at least all of it), this hike is for you! The trail starts at a high elevation, leaving a manageable 1,000 feet up to go. Enjoy crisp mountain air and an eagle’s eye view overlooking the Wenaha-Tucannon Wilderness. Atop the highest point in southeast Washington, take in panoramic views that includes the Wallowa Mountains of Oregon, Seven Devils of the Idaho Rockies, and maybe even a volcano to the west.

WHAT TO DO

Hiking

This six mile out and back does not disappoint. The 1,000 foot elevation gain is done in an initial steady climb, and then a few shorter climbs complete the journey and make the trail to the Oregon Butte Lookout fairly manageable, even for younger children. This hike takes advantage of a portion of the Mt. Misery Trail (#3113) but utilizes a spur trail to its end at the Oregon Butte Lookout. The Lookout is an active fire lookout and is staffed during certain parts of the year.

Consult the Forest Service page for agency information.
