WHAT TO DO
Kayaking/ Paddleboarding
As one of Adventure Fit’s favorite spots, this primitive shoreline access makes up for lack of amenities with its view. Basalt cliff walls frame the Columbia River as it makes its final bend west to the ocean. It is quite a dramatic backdrop for a sunset kayak or paddleboard adventure.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Although surrounded by a grain elevator, the highway, and a railroad on both sides of the river, this is still a remote spot to launch a kayak or paddleboard.
Amenities
There are no services, bathrooms, shelter, or seating. Make sure to pack water and ideally an umbrella for shade.
Field Notes
Disclaimer: While the Outside Walla Walla team has enjoyed all the adventures listed on this site, we cannot provide real-time conditions & maintenance reports. Extreme weather can change access overnight. Volunteer groups might lose capacity to manage trail systems. We do our best to report that information and update our site accordingly, but please read our Disclaimer (footer) and proceed with any adventure as your comfort level allows.
WHEN TO GO
Take advantage of what the weather gives you. The Wind Alert site offers a detailed forecast. With a subscription, the weather station at Port Kelley is available.
Of note, wind gusts often turn the river into an ocean-like scene with robust whitecaps. With the appropriate gear, this spot is prime for year round use. Clocking in just over half an hour from Walla Walla, this is an excellent add-on excursion to incorporate into your day.
HOW TO GET THERE
From Walla Walla, head west on US 12 for approximately 30 miles. At Wallula Junction, stay left toward Umatilla on US 730. Continue for four miles and take a right at Port Kelly Road. The grain elevators are owned by Northwest Grain Growers, so that is private property. Landmarks to watch for prior to the turn on Port Kelly Road include the Walla Walla Yacht Club just prior to the grain elevators.
