Rafting is a unique experience. Rivers are inherently so rejuvenating—the sound, the ripples and wave trains, all the life using its interconnected channels and tributaries as superhighways. So much water converges over thousands of square miles throughout the Salmon River Basin, and my family had an opportunity to see a small and magical sliver of that vast landscape rafting the Lower Salmon River to the confluence with the Snake River all the way to the take out at Heller Bar over four days with Minam Store Outfitters.

Second only to dessert was the magical sunset that punctuated a fun-filled day on the river. Each night on the river is unique. Riding wave trains is the obvious crowd-pleaser, but embrace the pace of beach life.

Why Raft with Minam Store Outfitters

Previously, we rafted the Wallowa River, Grande Ronde River, and Snake River through Hells Canyon with Minam Store Outfitters. These types of trips live in your bones—this is the stuff of core memories. It is a pace of life not easily found in the daily reaches of our overcommitted and plugged-in realities.

Our family opts for guide-supported trips for a few reasons. We don’t have the gear nor the space to store gear. As an observation, rafters love their stuff. Afterall, they pack a full kitchen on an inflatable boat. This is quite a departure from our standard backpacking mentality of freeze-dried meals, trail mix, and apples. We eat better on the river than at home.

Most importantly, it would take many lifetimes to achieve the experience and knowledge of the guides. They read the river, remember what holes to avoid, and respond to changing conditions. As if that wasn’t enough, they also set up camp, cook like five-star chefs, and know all the best games. These trips take all-inclusive to a new level.

Vacation is a precious opportunity to take a break, unwind, try something new, and reset. Rafting checks many boxes. It is an exhilarating and unique way to unplug. Floating through some of the most breathtaking landscape in the country, these four days on the river with family will last a lifetime.

What is a Rafting Trip Like

From the time we book a trip to the moment we hug our last goodbyes, we know we are in good hands. The details—such as trip logistics, itinerary, and a packing list—are all sent well in advance, guaranteeing plenty of time to gather any necessities. All the details are handled; this is one of the rare instances that the act of showing up pretty much concludes your responsibility.

We shuttled as a group and arrived at the put in, which was Pine Bar near Cottonwood, Idaho for the Lower Salmon River float. There is something incredibly therapeutic about only needing what is in the dry bag they provide to keep all your belongings secure and dry, a stark contrast from the wagon of miscellaneous goods to survive a day at the baseball field.

The first few hours I’m always consumed with a flood of emotions. I’m thankful I’m there, excited for what is to come, and, most importantly, finally disconnected from absolutely everything else. This is a trip to reset, redefine connection outside of its digital reference, and go with the flow.

The kids are buzzing with excitement and enjoying the newly discovered water blasters, cooling off and plotting their next sneak attack. A golden eagle is spotted, history about the region is shared by Minam Store Outfitter’s owner and guide, Grant Richie, and our first stop of the day for lunch quickly turns into a swimming and fishing extravaganza for all the kids.

After a few more rapids that tease the anticipation for bigger water the next day, we stop at Packers Creek. We arrived to tents set up, the kitchen in full swing, and games set out—the festivities moved from the water to the beach.

Every detail is considered. There is a chair for everyone, plenty of shade thanks to umbrellas and tarps, and freshly made-from-scratch guacamole and salsa as an appetizer. The evening has a gentle cadence as we all eat, play, swim, chat, and wind down watching a sunset thunderstorm in the distance.

A highlight of a rafting trip is sleeping under the stars (not a requirement but worth a try). Framed by the deep and rugged canyon walls, the night sky comes alive. The Milky Way haze and an occasional shooting star are worth staying awake until exhaustion takes hold.

That is the rhythm of a river trip—recharge and rest; wake to coffee, hot chocolate, and a breakfast packed with all the energy needed for the day ahead; play a little; raft a lot; eat even more; and soak in all the magic of camp.

When Did We Start Taking Our Kids Rafting

Traveling with kids is like running a class IV rapid in early spring. It feels unwise to attempt. I had those same reservations, which is why we started with a day trip on the Wallowa River. Since that trip, Minam Store Outfitters now guides day trips from Minam Store to the Wallowa’s confluence with the Grande Ronde River, shuttling back on the railroad. I quickly realized rafting is one of the easier adventures to enjoy as a family.

The kids, of course, did great. My anxiety quickly faded as their enthusiasm and engagement was undeniable. Boredom doesn’t exist on the river. If you ask Lottie Richie, Grant’s wife and fellow mastermind of Minam Store Outfitters, her kids rafted before they walked.

Remember, this is a guided rafting experience, so cross off setting up camp, cooking, and all the groovy details in between. Can you imagine just showing up at a basketball tournament or gymnastics performance without having to pack snacks, water, chairs, entertainment for the other siblings, and on and on? Focus solely on family and fun for four glorious days.

Sunset Fishing at Tire Eddy (Photo Credit: Gwen Dildine)Fishing off the boat as well as in camp was a favorite activity for all the families on the trip. Even the smallest of bass was celebrated. One guide tried his best to land a sturgeon, but alas the elusive fish was not interested.

How Much Does a Guided Rafting Trip Cost

It is always nice to know what something costs, especially in a world of hidden fees and endless subscriptions. Minam Store Outfitters offer several options, such as single-day trips to multi-day wine & food on the river adventures. No matter which option you choose, the fee is all-inclusive and transparent. Let’s compare four days on the Lower Salmon River to a classic four-day theme park vacation.

With a little research, I discovered the theme park requires daily ticketing and typically tries to upsell a bundle or exclusive access. There are two rates to choose from when booking with the Minam Store Outfitters, child and adult. The food is included in the cost of the rafting trip; that is not the case at a theme park. Transportation is potentially a wash depending on where you live. Likely, if you live in the Pacific Northwest, driving to Clarkston, Washington to meet the shuttle is far less expensive than flying a family of four.

My rough math, so not to speak for another company’s fees, puts the theme park exceeding the cost of the rafting trip over four days after just ticketing and a few meals. I didn’t even break down the cost of a hotel, rental car, parking fees, souvenirs, and the countless bottles of water it would take to survive a week on concrete.

I acknowledge that everyone’s definition of fun is different. I still remember meeting Chewbacca at Disney World many decades ago. The intangible benefits of a trip down the river are hard to beat—no lines or screen time. There is the space and pace to focus on connection, love, play, relaxation, and building memories that will stay front of mind for a lifetime.

Would Our Family Raft with Minam Store Outfitters Again

Each day I spend on the river, I feel like a week has passed. Not only do I cherish all the moments along the way, but it is the quality of the interactions that I miss most. I’m not trying to wake kids up, bark deadlines for departures to various commitments, or ask if a task is complete. I truly feel like this trip is a reset, a reminder of all the beauty in the world and the fleeting precious time we have with each other as life flows with the current.

I am forever grateful for all the river miles logged, and I can’t wait to see what is around the next bend. Until next time, Minam Store Outfitters!
